What is it?

The public transport industry is a key pillar in providing efficient and reliable rail and public bus services across Singapore. According to the Land Transport Industry Transformation Map (ITM), the demand for public transport workers will continue to grow to support the expansion of the public transport network. The Career Conversion Programme (CCP) is a Place-and-Train programme offered by SMRT, which aims to equip mid-career individuals with the necessary competencies to embark on a career in the public transport industry for the following roles: -

Rail

Rail Technician/Technical Officer

Technical Officers play an important role in day-to-day railway maintenance to ensure a safe, reliable and comfortable experience for commuters. Their key responsibilities are inspections, preventive and corrective maintenance and testing and troubleshooting. 

Assistant Rail Engineer

Assistant Rail Engineers (AEs) are tasked to lead and supervise a team of Technical Officers in performing maintenance, repair, overhaul, testing and troubleshooting of train system and controls. They also need to ensure workplace safety and provide support in administrative tasks such as report submission.

Assistant Station Manager/Station Manager

Rail Operations professionals play an important role in day-to-day train operations, ensuring excellent customer service, smooth travelling and safety of commuters. This include but not limited to, duties such as crowd control, incident management, access to stations and track access, and controlling of train services.

Train Captain

Train Captains operate the passenger trains ensuring safe and reliable commute for commuters. This include but not limited to, being well-versed with train operations and the functions of rail systems and equipment, communicate effectively with the Operations Control Centre (OCC) and make in-train public address announcement to provide commuters onboard with information timely.

Who can apply?

Locals who meet the following criteria may apply for the programme:

  • Singapore Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident;
  • Minimum 21 years old;
  • Graduated or completed National Service for at least 2 years prior to the point of application;
  • New job role trained under the CCP should be substantially different from previous job role, hence require reskilling for career switch;
  • Have no colour vision deficiency;
  • Be able to perform rotating shift duty, including weekends and public holidays; and
  • Be able to respond effectively to stressful or unpredictable situations.

 

*CCPs are geared towards helping mid-career individuals acquire skills to change career paths. Hence, career conversion is required when mid-career individuals undergo the CCPs.

However, individuals who have a continuous employment gap of at least 2 years prior to CCP commencement will be allowed to apply for CCP job roles similar to their previous jobs.

How does it work?

Successful candidates will be employed full-time by SMRT and will undergo facilitated classroom training and On-the-Job Training (OJT) lasting between two and six months, depending on the specific job role offered to the candidate. The training will equip candidates with the knowledge and necessary skill sets required to perform their jobs effectively.
