What is it?

The public transport industry is a key pillar in providing efficient and reliable rail and public bus services across Singapore. According to the Land Transport Industry Transformation Map (ITM), the demand for public transport workers will continue to grow to support the expansion of the public transport network. The Career Conversion Programme (CCP) is a Place-and-Train programme offered by SBS Transit, which aims to equip mid-career individuals with the necessary competencies to embark on a career in the public transport industry for the following roles: -

Bus

Bus Service Controller

Bus Service Controller performs daily operations at the operations control centre to ensure bus service reliability on the road. They will collaborate with SBS Transit’s specialist team on the Common Fleet Management System (CFMS). Their responsibilities include monitoring bus service performance in a real-time environment and taking necessary actions to minimise service delays by utilising online resources and support systems.

Bus Technician

Bus Technician oversees the daily preventive maintenance and repair activities while effectively managing manpower resources in the workshop. They are responsible for scheduling buses for preventive maintenance and inspections, as well as assessing the conditions of buses and prioritising those due for maintenance and repair. Additionally, they liaise with vendors on maintenance issues to ensure the smooth operation and upkeep of the bus fleet.

Assistant Station Manager

Assistant Station Manager plays a vital role in supporting the efficient and effective operation of the station, as well as ensuring the delivery of quality customer service. They provide assistance to passengers and are adept at dealing with emergencies calmly and effectively in public settings. Additionally, they are responsible for managing and driving passenger trains to ensure safe and reliable transportation for commuters.

Customer Service Officer

Customer Service Officers supports the daily train services and operations, ensuring smooth travelling and safety of its commuters. They are responsible for observing and taking appropriate action against any equipment failure and irregularities at stations, including requesting assistance from other railway staff. Additionally, they communicate with the Operations Control Centre (OCC) and passengers as necessary via train communications equipment, and monitor the performance of the train while traveling, taking appropriate action against any irregularities. They are also trained to drive passenger trains and are adept at handling emergency situations such as activating emergency communication devices, managing fire incidents on trains, and facilitating detrainment in the safest, most effective, and efficient manner in accordance with relevant working manuals and procedures.

Rail Traffic Controllers

Responsible for monitoring and controlling train operational activities, the Rail Traffic Controller ensures the provision of safe, efficient, and reliable train services at all times through logical decision-making. They are responsible for coordinating and mobilising the relevant Engineering and Operations staff to resolve failures or unexpected events in the most expeditious and safe manner, thereby contributing to the smooth and uninterrupted operation of railway services.

Station Manager

The Station Manager is responsible for delivering quality customer service and managing operations effectively. This role involves coordinating with both operations and non-operations staff to ensure a safe, efficient, and reliable service for customers. Additionally, the Station Manager is tasked with performance monitoring and competence assessment of Assistant Station Managers, ensuring adherence to station rules, procedures, and work instructions.


Who can apply?

Locals who meet the following criteria may apply for the programme:

  • Singapore Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident;
  • Minimum 21 years old;
  • Graduated or completed National Service for at least 2 years prior to the point of application;
  • New job role trained under the CCP should be substantially different from previous job role, hence require reskilling for career switch;
  • Have no colour vision deficiency;
  • Be able to perform rotating shift duty, including weekends and public holidays; and
  • Be able to respond effectively to stressful or unpredictable situations.

 

*CCPs are geared towards helping mid-career individuals acquire skills to change career paths. Hence, career conversion is required when mid-career individuals undergo the CCPs.

However, individuals who have a continuous employment gap of at least 2 years prior to CCP commencement will be allowed to apply for CCP job roles similar to their previous jobs.

How does it work?

Successful candidates will be employed full-time by SBS Transit and will undergo facilitated classroom training and/or On-the-Job Training (OJT) lasting between two and six months, depending on the specific job role offered to the candidate. The training will equip candidates with the knowledge and necessary skill sets required to perform their jobs effectively.
